Eastern Ghouta, Syria

Story

We are Ghiras Al Nahda, a group of Syrian humanitarians working to educate people living in besieged Eastern Ghouta region of rural Damascus to grow edible mushrooms at home as a lifesaving source of food.

Under siege since 2013, the area has been subject to continuous shelling with locals unable to leave the area. Limited supplies of food is able to reach inhabitants, and there is no access to fresh produce or sources of protein. As a result people are suffering from severe malnutrition and starvation.

A group of young friends living in the area felt that they had to take action and find edible fresh food themselves. One of the young men, Ahmad had seen some mushrooms randomly growing in the area and remembering the old Syrian saying “mushrooms are a poor man's meat” they decided to bring the idea forward to us to grow mushrooms.

Mushrooms contain the highest amount of protein of all vegetables, with dried mushrooms containing as much as veal. They are a good source of vitamin B and complex carbohydrates for energy. Growing mushrooms is also low maintenance and quick.

However, the region is not traditionally associated with mushroom growing, so in order to ensure the success of the programme, together with Nwat Centre for Scientific Studies, we spent three years researching and developing a growing kit and optimised for the region. Our programme has provided vital sustenance to 1200 people since 2015.

Why we need funding?

To build on the success of our research and spread our self-sustainable model in which a wider proportion of the community has access to mushrooms in their daily diet.

To enable our trained staff of mycologists, biologists and technicians to deliver 3-day mushroom growing workshops to 75 school teachers and 60 unemployed men and women so they can provide food for their family and neighbours. Each trainee will leave with a mushroom-growing toolkit which includes the mushroom spawns for them to grow in the homes and 1 kg of edible mushrooms as a gift.

Our team will also provide ongoing support to the trainees via face to face visits and over WhatsApp to ensure the success of each individual's’ crop.

This project will support 135 families and help feed over 800 of the most vulnerable people in Syria.

Furthermore we will educate growers in ways to market and sell mushrooms in the event that surplus crop is production beyond what is needed for local consumption. This will provide the local community with a way to generate income.

We need your support to help make this project a success, please contribute to our campaign.

As an organisation we do not have any other access to direct funding, that is why crowdfunding is incredibly important for us in order to raise money quickly for essential health projects. Because of this lack of direct funding, if we do not reach our fundraising target the project cannot go ahead - we simply do not have any other method to ‘top-up’ to the budget required. For more info on this - please see CanDo’s FAQs ‘What is all-or-nothing crowdfunding?’ and ‘What happens if a campaign doesn’t reach its target?’

Please support us however you can.

Thank you.

Finally, our project has been successfully completed!

Thanks to the great contributions of the CanDo community, our project has been successfully completed! We worked with 160 trainees - 18% women 82% men, including some elderly participants. Although the security situation during the project implementation phase was horrible including an extreme escalation by Syrian regime forces in Eastern Ghouta, our field team managed to achieve the campaign goals helping to provide people with food with high protein value (the mushroom) in the most dangerous place to live in the world.

09/10/2017

Project implementation has started

To our valuable supporters, we are pleased to share that our project to train our community in mushroom growing has now started in Eastern Ghouta. We are starting the theoretical and practical training course for 180 people in our community on how to grow mushrooms as a sustainable fresh source of food. Thank you for making this project possible. We will update you throughout the project.

**good news, match funding opportnity**

To our valuable supporters We just want to notify you that we have agreed with CanDo team to extend the deadline of our campaign for two weeks; until Sept 4th, 2017 whilst we explore the match funding opportunity. It is really a great chance for us to be able to get the campaign fully funded. This is the only way we will be able to implement our unique project and help our people produce food themselves. We still need your support by sharing the campaign as widely as you can. THANK YOU

Some Key Wins

CanDo Icon

Although the campaign had fewer trainees than planned (160 of 180), more people overall were supported thanks to their activities.

CanDo Icon

This campaign went a long way to reinforcing women’s roles in society. GAN reached 20 female trainees who were empowered to be the provider for their families.

CanDo Icon

Despite awful instability in the area after the campaign was implemented, GAN was able to follow up with 160 trainees out of the 180 aim, providing ongoing support via face to face visits and over WhatsApp to support their work.

CanDo Icon

The team educated growers in marketing and selling mushrooms so surplus crop can be sold to generate income - which at least 18 trainees pursued.

Campaign Outcome: Success!

216 wonderful CanDoers from 16 countries pulled together to raise an incredible 130% of the target amount, a grand total of £14,941 allowing the project to proceed.

Campaign Outcome: Success!

Not only did CanDoers hit the target of £68,000, we went above and beyond, raising a whopping 707% of the goal. Thanks to 134 Candoers from over 7 countries, the campaign reached an incredible £480,790. This covers the costs of running the entire hospital for a whole year, meaning the doctors and nurses of Hope Hospital have been able to keep providing the vital healthcare, check-ups and education that helps save lives for people in the middle of a conflict area.
